Dr. Bibek Rajbhandari is a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and an emergency physician, currently serving as the Department Head of General Practice and Emergency Medicine at Nepal Police Hospital. He is also enrolled in the Doctorate of Medicine (DM) program in Emergency Medicine at the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Rajbhandari has been instrumental in developing hospital-based disaster management plans. He regularly conducts tabletop exercises, drills, and full-scale simulation exercises to ensure preparedness for various emergency scenarios. His commitment to disaster preparedness is further demonstrated through his active involvement in numerous disaster training programs, including Hospital Preparedness in Emergency (HOPE), Hospital Disaster Preparedness and Planning (HDPR), and first aid training. He is also a trainer of Medical First Respondents (MFR) in the Disaster Management Division at Nepal Police.
In a notable display of leadership, Dr. Rajbhandari served as the team lead for the air medical evacuation from Wuhan to Nepal. He recently received an award from Global Health Security in Australia for his contributions in the above mentioned work. He has also contributed significantly to public health initiatives, being a member of the team that developed contact tracing and dead body management guidelines in Nepal Police.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Rajbhandari was a member of the contact tracing committee of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) and the expert committee of the Health Emergency Operation Center (HEOC) under the Ministry of Health and Population, as well as the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. His hands-on experience in disaster response is further evidenced by his ground-level involvement during the 2015 earthquake at the Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. Dr. Rajbhandari completed a course in Mountain Medicine and Rescue, showcasing his specialized skills in dealing with emergencies in challenging terrains. As the operative head of hospital preparedness and disaster planning for the Nepal Police hospital, he continues to enhance the country’s emergency response capabilities.
